Education Policy for M.Tech., MBA, B.Tech., M.Sc., and PG Diploma programmes

  1. Registration and Fee Payment:
Each semester of the Work-Integrated Learning Programmes begins with a mandatory REGISTRATION process, which specifies the prescribed course package for each student for that semester. The Registration process for each semester is completed when the student sends the duly signed Registration Card along with the payment for the semester fees. The student has to pay the full semester fees for every semester in which he / she registers, irrespective of the number of courses in his / her prescribed course package.
  2. Continuous Internal Evaluation:
BITS Pilani follows a continuous system of internal evaluation. Concept of Relative Grading procedure is adopted for grading. Letter Grades A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, E carrying grade points 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2 respectively are awarded for all courses other than Dissertation / Project Work for which only Non-Letter Grades namely EXCELLENT, GOOD, FAIR, POOR are awarded. If a student does not offer adequate opportunity for evaluation in a course, reports such as NC (Not cleared) may be awarded.
  3. Evaluation Scheme:
For each course in each semester, there will typically be 3 Evaluation Components (EC) spread over the semester according to the dates specified in the Course Handout for each course:

    Evaluation Component

Evaluation Component Description Weightage* Given & Conducted By
EC-1 Assignment / Quiz (Online) 15%* BITS Faculty
    EC-2 Mid-Semester Test 35%* BITS Faculty
EC-3 Comprehensive Exam  50%* BITS Faculty
    * Indicative weightage distribution for evaluation components. It will vary from course to course.
  4. EC-2 and EC-3 examinations are conducted only at the designated exam centres located in the following cities: Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Dubai, Goa, Pilani, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Jamshedpur and Coimbatore. Specific details regarding these designated exam centres will be communicated by BITS Pilani in due course. Due to operational considerations, the institute may not offer EC-2 and EC-3 examinations in certain cities mentioned above. In such instances, students who have chosen the exam center in those cities will be requested to appear for exams at an alternate exam center location. Students opting for the Dubai exam center will have to pay an additional exam fee for taking the exams from the Dubai exam center.
  5. Relative Grading Procedure:
At the end of each semester, the performance of each student in a course is specified as a LETTER GRADE (namely A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D or E), which is obtained through a Relative Grading procedure. The final grading in each course is done by tabulating in descending order (equivalently a histogram) the total marks obtained by all students in that particular course. The performance of the course will be analysed in terms of average, highest and lowest marks and the dividing lines between various clusters. Gaps between clusters and the nature of clusters will guide drawing the dividing lines between various grades. Final grading will be announced only after approval by the Examination Committee of BITS Pilani.
  6. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):
The CGPA (calculated on a 10 point scale) will be used to describe the overall performance of a student (from the semester of admission till the point of reckoning) in all courses for which LETTER GRADES are awarded.

                                                                                                     U1*G1 + U2*G2 + U3*G3 ……..
                                                                                     CGPA = ___________________________
                                                                                                                U1 + U2 + U3 .....

Where U1, U2, U3 …… denote UNITS of the course, and G1, G2, G3 denote grade points of the LETTER GRADES awarded in that course. Non-Letter grades do not go into the computation of CGPA.
  7. Minimum Academic Requirements:
Subject to fulfilling the Academic Regulations of the Institute, the student will be issued a grade sheet at the end of each semester, a Transcript and a Provisional Certificate followed by the Final Degree Certificate at the end of the programme.

The minimum academic requirements for successful completion of our M.Tech., MBA and Post Graduate programmes require that a student obtains a minimum CGPA of 5.50 and no E Grade or RRA Report in any course. For B.Tech. programmes, the student should obtain a minimum CGPA of 4.50 and no E Grade or RRA Report in any course. No student can register in any other course of his/her degree along with Dissertation in M.Tech. or Project Work in B.Tech.

Failure to meet the minimum academic requirements will bring the student under the purview of the Academic Monitoring Board (AMB), which will prescribe a suitable course package for an additional semester to the student and monitor his / her progress and academic performance closely.
  8. Dissertation / Project Work:
The students enrolled in B.Tech. programmes will have to register for a full semester Project Work in their final semester. The students of M.Tech. programmes will be required to register for a full semester Dissertation in their final semester.

Each student should complete all prescribed coursework of the programme and fulfil the minimum academic requirements before he / she can register for Project Work or Dissertation in his / her final semester of the programme. If the academic performance of the student falls below the minimum requirements, he / she will be required to register in some courses again in a subsequent semester to improve his / her CGPA, before he / she can register for Project Work / Dissertation.

As admissions to the Work Integrated Learning Programmes are based on various factors like student employment, employer consent, mentor consent, etc., any student changing his / her employer or mentor should inform the Dean immediately and get such changes approved, failing which the student would be Discontinued from the Programme (DP), resulting in his / her name getting struck off from the rolls of the Institute.

Students opting for the Dubai exam centre will have to pay an additional exam fee for taking the exams from the Dubai exam centre.
  5. Relative Grading Procedure:
After evaluations of the comprehensive exam, the performance of each student in a course is specified as a LETTER GRADE (namely A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D or E), which is obtained through a Relative Grading procedure, which is described below. 7. Minimum Academic Requirements:

Successful completion of the Certificate Programme would require meeting the following criterion:

    i. Completion of all courses with a minimum C- Grade in every course, which is mandatory for the successful completion of the Certificate Programme.

ii. Obtaining a minimum CGPA of 5.00

The total marks obtained by the student in each course at the end of the semester, considering all evaluation components including quizzes, assignments, labs, and comprehensive examination put together, is used to determine the final grade in that course using a Relative Grading procedure. There are no minimum passing marks for any particular evaluation component.

Any student who obtains a grade below C- in any course, or who fails to appear for the Comprehensive Examination of any course, would be required to register again for the same course in a subsequent cohort and take all evaluation components prescribed for that course in that cohort.

Subject to fulfilling the Academic Regulations of the Institute, the student will be issued a grade sheet at the end of each phase of programme, a Transcript followed by the Final Certificate at the end of the programme.
  8. Capstone Project:
