M.Tech. Software Engineering

M.Tech. in Software Engineering is a four-semester Work Integrated Learning Program, which leads to a master’s degree in Software Engineering. The nature of software has evolved from small, single user systems to complex, multi-user systems catering to needs such as Retail Banking, Supply chain management, Telecom service management, etc. Engineering such systems requires newer capabilities over and above application of software technology.

Only those working professionals who are located at Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Pune can apply to this programme.

Programme Highlights
  • The programme is of four semesters, with face-to-face classes on weekends in Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, and Pune conducted by BITS Pilani faculty

  • The program offers a set of core courses and elective courses. The focus of the program is software engineering. However the program offers electives to gain knowledge in technology domains as well. The program ends with a dissertation that enables students to advance in their professional area by applying concepts and techniques in a project.

  • The methodology is a combination of classroom learning and experiential learning. Experiential learning consists of lab exercises, case studies and work integrated activities.

  • Lab exercises consist of programming exercises, experiments using simulation tools, analysis and design of systems, etc. Some of the tools used in assignments are Code::Blocks, SQLite, Star UML, NS2, WireShark and Keil.

  • Case studies consist of analysing a given situation and finding solutions to issues, using techniques learnt

  • Work integrated activities consist of looking at work performed at the workplace using concepts learnt and potentially enhancing the quality of software at the workplace using techniques learnt. This enables students to relate concepts to their professional work.

Learning Methodology

The programme emphasises on Experiential Learning that allows learners to apply concepts learnt in classroom in simulated and real work situations. This is achieved through:

Simulation based exercises

Simulation based exercises

  • Simulation Software like NS2, Tossim, Net-SNMP, MultiSim, CPU-OS Simulator,Cheddar, Keil, CCS Studio

  • Design & Modelling Tools like StarUML

  • Programming Environments like Eclipse,Code::Blocks, Amazon Cloud, Android Studio

  • Other software/ tools like SQLite, Wireshark, Weka, OpenProj

Case Studies and Assignments: Carefully chosen real-world cases & assignments are both discussed and used as problem-solving exercises during the programme

Dissertation/ Project Work: The fourth semester offers an opportunity for learners to apply their knowledge gained during the programme to a real world like complex project. The learner is expected to demonstrate understanding of vital principles learnt across semesters and their ability to successfully apply these concepts
